Kitten Season Is Here

Kitten season is a challenging time for animal rescues and shelters across the United States, including in Santa Clara County, California. According to the Silicon Valley Animal Control Authority (SVACA), which serves several cities in Santa Clara County, kitten season in the area typically runs from March through September. During this time, the shelter sees a significant increase in the number of kittens coming into their care.

In 2020, SVACA took in 1,531 cats and kittens, with 1,168 of those being kittens. Of those 1,168 kittens, only 719 were adopted, meaning that over 450 kittens did not find homes and required transfer to other shelters or foster homes. Additionally, in 2020, SVACA had to euthanize 68 cats and kittens due to health or behavior issues.

Here are some helpful statistics and information about kitten season:

  1. The peak of kitten season usually occurs in late spring and early summer.

  2. A single female cat can have up to three litters in a year, with an average of four to six kittens per litter.

  3. Kittens as young as 4 months old can become pregnant, so it's essential to spay and neuter cats early to prevent unwanted litters.

  4. According to the ASPCA, only about half of the cats who enter animal shelters make it out alive. The other half are either euthanized or die in the shelter due to illness or other issues.

So, what can you do to help during kitten season in Santa Clara County?

  1. Spay and Neuter Your Cats: This is the most effective way to prevent unwanted litters and reduce the number of kittens entering shelters.

  2. Foster Kittens: If you have experience with cats and kittens, consider fostering kittens during kitten season. Fostering provides kittens with a safe and loving environment while they wait for their forever homes.

  3. Donate to Animal Shelters and Rescues: Donations of money, food, supplies, and your time are always needed and appreciated by animal shelters and rescues in Santa Clara County and beyond.

  4. Adopt a Kitten: If you're ready to add a new furry friend to your family, consider adopting a kitten from an animal shelter or rescue in Santa Clara County. By adopting, you're not only giving a kitten a loving home but also making space for another kitten in need at the shelter.

Kitten season is a challenging time for animal shelters and rescues in Santa Clara County and across the country, but there are many ways you can help. Spaying and neutering your cats, fostering kittens, donating to animal shelters and rescues, and adopting a kitten are all great ways to make a difference and reduce the number of kittens entering shelters. Remember, every little bit counts, and together we can help make a difference in the lives of kittens in need.
