Fourth of July Pet Safety: Keeping Cats (and Other Pets) Safe During Fireworks

Fireworks, parties, and travel can be stressful—and sometimes dangerous—for pets. Here are practical steps you can take to keep cats (and other pets) safe and comfortable during Fourth of July celebrations.

1) Keep pets indoors and secure

Keep cats inside all day and night (even indoor/outdoor cats).
Close windows and doors; use screens and baby gates if needed.
Create a quiet ‘safe room’ with food, water, litter box, and a hiding spot.
Play white noise, a fan, or calming music to help mask fireworks.

2) Update ID and microchip info

Make sure collars fit properly and have an ID tag with a current phone number.
If your pet is microchipped, confirm the registration is up to date.
Take a clear, recent photo of your pet—just in case.

3) Watch for common holiday hazards

Keep pets away from fireworks, sparklers, and glow sticks.
Secure trash and food: bones, corn cobs, skewers, and fatty foods can cause serious illness.
Keep alcohol, cannabis products, and nicotine out of reach.
Use pet-safe bug control—many human products are toxic to cats.

4) If you’re hosting a gathering

Let guests know your pet is inside and ask them to keep doors closed.
Use a sign on the door: ‘Pet inside—please close quickly.’
Keep your pet in a separate room during peak activity and fireworks.

5) If you’re traveling

Consider leaving cats at home with a trusted sitter—travel can be very stressful.
If you must travel, use a secure carrier and never leave pets in a hot car.
Bring familiar bedding and keep routines as consistent as possible.

When to call a vet

If your pet shows signs of heat stress, trouble breathing, repeated vomiting/diarrhea, tremors, or ingests something toxic, contact your veterinarian or an emergency clinic right away.
